In December 2008 international teams will race over 1000 kilometers to the Geographic South Pole.
WHAT IS THE SOUTH POLE RACE?
"People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things." - Edmund Hillary
The South Pole Race will be the first race to the South Pole since Scott and Amundsen’s historic race nearly 100 years ago. Roald Amundsen arrived on Dec. 1911, Robert Scott on Jan. 17 1912.
After almost two weeks of intensive polar training in Antarctica covering approximately 200km, teams of 3 will set off across the Antarctic Plateau to race 1000km across the largest ice cap in the world to the geographic South Pole.
The racers will face constant challenges throughout their journey: surviving in temperatures as low as -50C, navigating and skiing while pulling a 70Kg. pulk (sled), melting snow for drinking water, losing 20% of their body weight, climbing to altitudes of 9,000 feet while sleep deprived and, through everything, working together as a team..
