In December 2008 international teams will race over 1000 kilometers to the Geographic South Pole.
1. RACE TEAM
Team Member 1: Mark Pollock
Mark's story of rebuilding his life after unexpectedly losing his sight continues to inspire people all over the world.
“The shock of going blind was almost unbearable. One moment I was on the crest of a wave with everything going my way, the next I went blind and my life changed forever. I thought my life was over.”
On 10 th April 2004 , six years to the day that Mark went blind, he completed the world's most extreme marathon at the North Pole. The story is incredible and what he has learnt on the journey reminds us that there is a power that resides within us all to take control of our lives .
“It doesn't matter if I'm racing at the North Pole or in the Gobi desert, developing new opportunities in my business or even writing a book, the same principles apply.”
Team Member 2: Simon O’Donnell
Coming from a background in competitive team sports, I have been exploring new ways of getting wet, tired and muddy in recent years.
In 2003, I signed up to a three year course in Outdoor Adventure Management during which I took part on a number of expeditions around Ireland, Corsica and the Indian Himalaya.
At present I am coaching rugby full-time in addition to directing a new expedition based program in Dublin.
“I had never considered going to the South Pole until I heard about Mark’s ambitions and the prospect of participation was instantly captivating.”
Team Member 3: Inge Solheim
Inge spent time in the Norwegian Armed Forces and has gone on to teach winter warfare and survival to the Norwegian military. After a spell working in the financial sector he decided to spend more time on his passion of leading expeditions. He has been to the North Pole seven times, the first time as a member of a Borge Ousland expedition and multiple times as an expedition-leader/guide.
He has also built up extensive mountaineeringexperience in between leading groups on Spitzbergen, filming Polar Bears, skiing, dog-sledding and guiding tourists.
